What has changed for bulk billed Telehealth items?

If your practice is offering, or considering offering video and / or phone Telehealth appointments, the way you capture patient consent for bulk billed Telehealth items has recently changed. You can view the list of requirements from Services Australia here.

What are the requirements for capturing bulk billed Telehealth consent?

You can obtain a patient’s consent for bulk billed Telehealth either in writing or by email. You’ll need to complete an approved assignment of benefit form. You are required to give the patient a copy of the completed approved form as outlined by Services Australia here.

If you can’t get patient agreement in writing or by email for bulk billing Telehealth services, you can get verbal agreement from your patient during the Telehealth consultation as outlined by Services Australia here.

If you are obtaining verbal consent for bulk billed Telehealth items, you are required to explain to the patient that you’ll fill in the patient signature field in the approved form and confirm that the patient agrees.

If the patient agrees, you need to type “patient verbally agreed” in the patient signature field. You are then required to send the completed form to your patient.
